Fantasy football drafts are under way. Let’s look at a “team” (QB, 2RB, 3WR, TE) of players that have been overrated in early drafts.
Drew Brees (NO) (QB5, Avg. Pick 37.7) – He’s now 36 years old. Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills are gone. Sure he still has Brandin Cooks who could have a huge year, but the Saints are looking to focus more on the run this season. I’d rather take one of Newton, Ryan, Romo or Stafford 3-5 rounds after Brees.
Adrian Peterson (MIN) (RB3, 3.7) – We know he is a great running back, but he does come with some question marks. While he was reinstated by the NFL, he reportedly wants out of Minnesota and may hold out for a trade. He also missed almost all of last year and is going into his age-30 season. I just don’t think he is worth a top-5 pick. I’d easily take Lynch (RB4) or Bell (RB5) before AP.
Todd Gurley (STL) (RB15, 34.6) – Drafted 10th overall in the 2015 NFL draft, he has the talent to become an elite fantasy running back one day. However, he is still recovering from an ACL tear and we don’t know when he will be ready. In addition, when he does come back, he may have to share carries with Tre Mason who emerged as a good RB for STL last year. I’d much rather have rookie Melvin Gordon (SD) who has a clearer path to a big workload, and is picked on average about one pick before Gurley. Also look for Mark Ingram (NO) who is being taken about 5 or 6 picks after Gurley.
DeSean Jackson (WAS) (WR17, 42.3) – Coach wants to run more and get other receivers more involved in the passing game. He does have big-play ability, but will be too inconsistent for my liking.
Sammy Watkins (BUF) (WR18, 45.0) – He did show his talent as a rookie with a few big games last year. But he’s tied to a bad QB in Matt Cassel, and the team will run more with the acquisition of LeSean McCoy.
Martavis Bryant (PIT) (WR19, 48.3) – He produced 549 Yds and 8 TDs with only 26 receptions last year. He should have a bigger role this year, but that efficiency will not last. I like him but just not as much as some guys picked after him.
– Good WR options drafted just after Jackson, Watkins and Bryant are: Andre Johnson, Jordan Matthews, Julian Edelman and Brandon Marshall.
Martellus Bennett (CHI) (TE5, 61.5) – Bennett is looking for a new deal, and could be traded, so his situation is a bit of a question mark. He did have 916 Yds and 6 TDs last year, but his final 12 games were only on a 16-game pace of 828-2.6. I’d rather wait for Ertz, Gates, Cameron, Witten or Daniels who are being drafted 1-3 rounds after Bennett.
